http://www.gallowaynyc.org/Just some pictures of running the 50 K in Niagara Falls (31 miles) My first Ultra...mine, Lisa's and Elizabeth's. Will, please post pics and comments if you'd like. Edit as you see needed. If someone can't view pics, let me know, I will send a link to my Kodak online photo album...easy to view, no downloading required.
I want to first say THANKS DINO AND NORMA for all your advice. Dino, your words kept coming back to us..."Ultras are a different kind of beast than marathons"..."if they give you 7 hours, do it in 7 hours"..."take your time"... "stick to your plan" ...."walk the hills" ...well, we did..and WE DID IT !!! AND I FELT RIDICULOUSLY GREAT. There were 125 runners...we ran along the Niagara Parkway, mostly flat, but some hills. I did it in 6 hrs 53 min. we all came in within the 7 hours. Elizabeth proudly came last at 7 hours give or take a second or two. (and that's because she made a wrong turn near the end) The race director said our group did well. They wait for everyone even if it takes longer than the 7 hours... We didn't get medals, but key chains/dog tags, with our names on them and an Awesome Hooded Sweatshirt with NIAGARA ULTRA on the Back.
I recommend this as a first Ultra...(but be warned, it's usually very hot, we just got lucky with the cloud gods)
An AID station every 5K...very nice people, and support. Food at the finish, Pizza, Beer, sandwiches, soda and chips...and of course, water and Gatorade as you crossed the finish. They took good care of us.
We were blessed with cloudy skies. Last year and previous years it was in the 90's and no clouds. We lucked out. We ran 3:1 for the first 30 K...we felt good, then we took it down to 2:1, then at the last 10 K, we did 1:1, 1:2 whatever and we walked some, and we finished feeling great. Well, I felt great..and I ran it in the last few yards...
